Rob Steel from A Little Treat (Deep AI)

When she was promoted to work as Rob’s assistant two years ago, she was thrilled. He was well known among the single ladies at MegaCorp as a hot prospect – he’s extremely good-looking and on his way to becoming a partner – so when their working relationship quickly spilled into something altogether more heated, she was pretty pleased with herself. But Laura is starting to find his penchant for desktop shenanigans a bit annoying.

And he’s a complete workaholic. In the two years since Laura started working with him, she’s given MegaCorp every last ounce of sweat and has taken precisely ten days of annual leave in that entire time. When Rob reminds Laura that they recently went to Istanbul together she points out it was only for two nights and was a work thing anyway.

He clearly doesn’t listen to Laura – she’s sure she’s told him about her mother being in Thailand and her father living in Canada with ‘Batface’ his second wife but he doesn’t seem to be aware of this when she explains why she’s the only family member who can help her Granny through a health crisis.

Rob is rarely seen out of a suit, goes everywhere by car – even central London – and never goes out to ‘the sticks’. He almost never eats at home but orders Deliveroo to the office. He likes the finer things in life – champagne and oysters – and can afford them.

Although Rob can be a bit brusque and works too hard, Laura thinks he is exactly what she’s been looking for in a life partner; handsome, solvent, well-adjusted and, apart from struggling to keep his hands off her in the office, a considerate lover. He’s also predictable and there’s something nice about knowing someone well enough to know what they’re going to order in a restaurant. It feels safe.

But, as Laura becomes more invested in her life in Tillingham and takes her eye of the ball at the office, her relationship with Rob becomes increasingly fraught and Laura learns that Rob isn’t as predictable as she thought.
