Book review: YOU TOO: The Millingham Series book three

By Katharine Light

Paperback

Read on after the pictures...

Launched this evening at a delightful gathering in Earlsfield's Brathway Hall, You Too, the third book in the Millingham series, continues the story of Anna and Rob once, beginning just after where the previous book left off.

Having a child has been almost an obsession of hers for the past year and, with Rob’s willing assistance, she finally conceives. But pregnancy is not what she expects and it’s only Rob’s continuing support that helps her get through the mental stress of balancing work with the physical strain of nine months of hyperemesis (severe nausea). Can Anna, “freighted with fatigue”, get over her past trauma and her desperate need for independence to shed her protective carapace and admit that her feelings for Rob go beyond the mere convenience of having found a trustworthy sperm donor and supportive birth partner?

And can Rob with his “jolting, chilly fear of domesticity” overcome his fear of being “relentlessly suffocated, the essence of himself crushed” and elicit from his friend the exclamation “‘Where did you come from, and what have you done with Rob Randall?”

Beautifully and carefully written, Katharine has some gorgeous turns of phrase and delights us with some tender moments, such as when Rob presses Anna’s hand to his chest saying “it’s chaos in here.”

This book is definitely not chaotic, bringing some much-needed closure for Anna and Rob, while leaving open the possibility of, I hope, a fourth book in the series. If I’m right, I very much looking forward to reading more from Katharine Light.
